The Study Session on the future of terminology in Canada, organized by the Joint Committee on Terminology in Canada (JCTC) will take place on Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Université du Québec en Outaouais.

This event will provide an opportunity to look at where things stand according to the Translation Bureau (TB), the Office québécoise de la langue française, TermNet America and committees of terminologists and technologies. It will also be an excellent networking opportunity for all participants.

The Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario (ATIO) is organizing an intensive “Grammar Boot Camp” over October 29 and 30th, 2011.  The event, open to the public, will be a chance to flex your grammar muscles.  The workshop will be led by Frances Peck, editor, writer and instructor with over 20 years’ experience.

In September, the highly anticipated SDL Trados Studio 2011 is expected to be released on the market. The newest version of the software will be equipped with more upgrades and new features and will make using SDL that much more efficient.

Some enhancements anticipated for the program include a Track Changes function, better customization and applications, an enhanced QA feature, along with a whole host of other improvements.

To help with the transition, SDL is offering cheaper upgrades to 2009 users, as well as several seminars hosted in July to aid users in mastering the new version.

This past Thursday, June 30, 2011, 25 people came out to raise a glass at the Evening for Language Professionals at the Brasseurs du Temps in Gatineau. The event was organized by Lyne Brassard, in charge of social activities at the Association des travailleurs autonomes et des micro-entreprises du secteur langagier (ATAMESL).

Students from the Université du Québec en Outaouais, Univeristy of Ottawa graduates and established professionals in the language sector all took this opportunity create or strengthen work relationships and converse in a casual setting.

Diana Franz, Language Professional at the Language Technologies Research Centre (CRTL) won the evening’s door prize, a gift card for Librairie du Soleil.

This initial outing sets the stage for collaboration among working professionals and language-sector associations while bridging the gap between translation students and graduates.

In February and March 2012, ISIT (Institut de management et de communication interculturels, Institute of Intercultural Management and Communication) and McGill University will be holding colloquiums in Paris and Montreal respectively.

These colloquiums will provide a contextual background against which the translation policies of the 21st centruy will emerge in organizational situations.

For the colloquium, ISIT and McGill University are calling on professionals, practicioners and researchers to participate in a productive international debate by submitting a one page abstract for a 30 minute presentation on the topic of Issues in the Strategic Management of Language Policy.

On June 20, 2011 in Luxembourg, the Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament hosted its second seminar in its "Terminology in the changing world of translation" series.

This seminar featured world famous experts and specialists from EU institutionsthat shared their ideas and best practices on the role of terminology in today’s translation technologies.

Featuring such language professionals as Licia Corbolante, Dr. Andreas Eisele and Jaap van der Meer, he seminar focused especially on terminology mining and quality assurance, multilingual terminology management, synergy between terminology and machine translation, and terminology in CAT tools.
